Elle s’appelait Sarah (Sarah’s Key)

I have wanted to watch this movie since it came to the theatres, but then time flew and suddenly it was on TV and i could see it in my own living room.

Sarah’s Key is a movie about an American journalist married to a Frenchman, Julia Jarmond. She is assigned to write an article about the Vel d’Hiv round up, which took place 16-18 of July 1942. She interviews survivors and neighbours, but soon she discovers a family secret about her own house.

One day when she visits her mother in law, she tells her that they moved into the apartment in august 1942. Sarah adds up the logical and finds out that the dates are consitent with just 1 month after the Round Up. She starts digging into the history of the house and stumbles upon a family secret which will link her forever to the destiny of a young Jewish girl, Sarah.

She resolves to find out what happened to the former owners: Wladyslaw and Rywka Starzynski, parents of 10-year-old Sarah and four-year-old Michel. The more Julia discovers – especially about Sarah, the only member of the Starzynski family to survive – the more she uncovers about Bertrand’s family, about France and, finally, herself.
