For years I have suffered from winter depression and this year was no different than the previous years. However – planning ahead I know I can do something to make it better.
Winter has come, it is time to flee. Destination: Costa Rica
My first flight this morning was from Oslo to Newark. It was an 8,5 hour long flight. I watched movies, read and tried to get some sleep to catch up on several nights with little sleep. Last night was no exception with only 4 hours with my cheek on the pillow. Not necessarily due to poor planning or that I hadn’t done most of the packing already, but neither yesterday nor the day before was I home before midnight. Wednesday I went for a Christmas concert with my sister and yesterday after work I went to see “The Hobbit – The desolation of Smaug” a the movies before I left and then went to deliver the cat to his sitters.
When I came home at midnight I checked up on the last few items to pack and started backing up my cellphones and camera and laptop in case either should be stolen during the trip. That took its time.
I had a 3 hour layover at Newark airport before my next flight to Houston. However most of the time was used to go through the passport control, pick up luggage, go through customs control, re-check the luggage and then go through the security control again. Queues were long and I was only left with 30 minutes to search for some food to go (the worst sushi I ever had – and I eat a lot of sushi).
In Houston I had to pick up my luggage and while waiting in the luggage area a message was anounced over the speakers… (By the way… You know you have arrived to Texas when… ): “For all passengers travelling with firearms you can pick them up at counter 21. Please bring your owner ID.”
When I had claimed my luggage I took the airport train to my hotel where I checked in and met up with my friends Melanie and Lisa. We went to have dinner at Good Eats restaurant and I was a bit torn about what to eat. I could have either Howl at the moon Nachos or Baby Back Ribs.
In the end I ended up with the Texas Star Signature Steak. Lovely.
It was so good to see both Melanie and Lisa again. We chatted and chatted and in the end we were asked politely to leave. The restaurant was closing :D We went back to my hotel and kept talking there. Melanie left at 1 am and Lisa stayed over to help me with my luggage in the morning. And … when you see you friends once every 2 years it’s nice to be able to see them for as long as possible. I fell asleep in an instant.

This week I work late because of a course that is scheduled towards US time. However that is perfect (because in Norway these days it gets dark at 3pm and sun doesn’t get up until 8:30’ish and most of the day is gone so we dont get much daylight) and now I can spend a lot of time outside in the beautiful sunny, snowcovered world!
Yes, It looks cold! It was cold too! -17C to be clear… Thats when your snot freezes when you inhale!! Just for your information :D But its so beautiful and when you are dressed properly (which I was not) its awesome beautiful to be outside on days like this !
Today we had the first snowfall of the season.
It looks quite nice, huh? I’m starting to look fwd for christmas :D
Finally it started snowing. This year I have been awaiting the snow with great anticipation. Last year it started snowing on the 12th of november (I remember so well, because it was the date I travelled to Rome to spend a weekend there) and the snow stayed for 5,5 months until aprilish.
It was one of the hardest and longest winters of my life (due to the actual length of it, but also due to me loosing my job and a relationship that went down the sewer) and I was utterly depressed.
Lots of things have happened since then and I am in a completely different place in life and state of mind. This winter is already 4 weeks shorter than last year. I have a job that I love and I have accomplished so many things this year that I am proud of! And soon there is christmas and then I will meet up with lots of good friends for a New Years party :D And… in the new year – I will be going to Costa Rica. I am sooooooo much looking fwd for that I almost feel like a child before christmas (I feel like that about christmas as well though) just thinking about going back there.
Darn. I sure know how to talk myself out of a topic. Thing is: It’s snowing and I’m really happy about it ! I love the first snowfall!!! I love tasting the snowflakes on my tongue and how the snow makes everything look so brilliantly white and beautiful during the dark season. I love how it gets me into that christmas spirit…
and … this year I am totally looking fwd to go snowboarding !!!
After a 3 weeks break due to the head injury that I got last time I snowboarded, I was back in the slopes again. This time with a helmet.
I went to Grefsenkollen with a fellow Couchsurfing friend of mine, Wouter, from The Netherlands, living and working here in Oslo.
The weather was beautiful, sunny and not a single cloud to be seen, perfect to spend a day in the sun on the board in the slopes. I must admit since I last time fell and hit my head, I was nervous and a lot more insecure than I even was the first time I tried boarding this year. Unfortunately I was so insecure about my own skills today, that I fell on my back and actually hit my head again already the first 100 meters of the slope. THANKFULLY this time I had a helmet on and I didnt hurt my head any further.
The slopes were freshly prepped and the layer was somewhat hard, which made it difficult to make turns with the same confidense I experienced the past times I tried snowboarding. The past times we had lots of freshly fallen snow which made it difficult to obtain high speed, so I realize I need to learn to not get afraid when I into somewhat steep areas that makes it difficult to keep low speed. :D
However the view from Grefsenkollen is beautiful over Groruddalen and the weather was lovely and my confidence grew throughout the day. I just have to get back into the slopes again soon so that I dont forget about what I have learned this time :D
Groruddalen from Grefsenkollen
Hehe – So… After I managed to get a minor brain concussion from falling last time I snowboarded … I decided to get a helmet.
I was lucky considering they had great sales today so I got it for less than half price ! :D
Cant complain about that !
Funny thing is that I had to get the smallest size (x-small) as I apparently am not thick-headed. Hehehehehe.
I also got myself some new oilloinnertøy -famously known in english as long superunderwear in wool – from Norheim (via G-sport).
I should be well protected against the cold now – when snowboarding or hanging out outside :D
I woke up this morning at 7:30, after a night with just a few hours of sleep.
No reason, just wasnt able to fall asleep when i wanted to (not until 3:30 am).
I prepared myself for a day out in the sun and snow, dressing up in winter gear took my board under my arm and got the train to the city centre where I met up with Daniel and Sven before we took the metro to Majorstua where we met Gabriel.
Off to Tryvann we went.
It was a particularly lovely day and lots of people headed the same way as us. The winter holidays started yesterday as well – hence lots of tourists and other locals, had also decided to spend the day in the slopes with us.
I got myself a polar buff cause I had left my scarf at home (it was a bit early when I left my place) and Daniel and Sven headed for the childrens slope and Gabriel and I went to the green slope. I am not very advanced yet, but the childrens slopes are not for me any longer.
More colleagues of Daniel and Gabriel joined us throughout the day and in the end we became a big group. We all had lunch at Tryvannsstua. Yummy wafles and hot chocolate.
After lunch I became a bit braver and that may not have been a good idea. Agent 007 Marianne fell (I must admit – I generally fell quite few times compared to the first day I snowboarded) right on my back and hit my head on the snow. Woooo… Swiiing :D Yeah.. I ended up shaken, but not stirred – just like Agent Bond likes his Martinis prepared. I immediately became somewhat dizzy and nauxeous, but it half passed quite quick. I had some minor issues with concentration, but that helped me go a lot slower, so in the end it was probably for the best. However as the day passed on … i was quite certain I had gotten a concussion again. I say again because I have had quite a few of them, both minor and grave ones, hence it is very easy for me to get a minor one where others would get nothing at all.
Apart from that minor injury, we had a fantastic day and the weather was great, the snow was great and the nature was beautiful ! It was a lovely day!
We spent 7 hours in the slopes. We even tried the blue slope (more advanced than the green) and that was scary, but quite fun as well.
When we were done, we all headed down to Majorstua for After-Ski at Gamle Major Pub. That was really nice. After the After-Ski we went to have dinner in Grønland. It was a lovely day !!
I went home, kicked off my clothes and went to bed, exhausted after 7 hours of working out …
